Bernard Jeffrey McCullough is an Emmy award nominated American actor and stand up comedian. Born to a single mother who raised him to go through the Chicago Vocational Career Academy, Bernie had to go through a tough life to achieve his goals. Mac started off as a stand up comedian in popular clubs in Chicago. Towards his late 20s Mac began to grow as a comedian and was chosen to feature in HBO’s Def Comedy Jam which put him in the spotlight.
He started acting in minor roles during the early 90s and was chosen for his breaking role as Pastor Clever in Ice Cube’s 1995 film ‘Friday’. Later he appeared in many movies and TV shows to prove his talents. To stand out from the traditional black comedian genre, he took on the role in 2001’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ as Frank Catton.
According to previous interviews Bernie Mac has stated he had been whipped with a belt by both his grandmother and mother in his childhood. This is reflected in the film ‘Charlies Angel: Full Throttle’, where Bernie Mac plays the role of the new Bosley and has a mother with a military attitude. In 2004, Mac played the title roll of a retired baseball player in the film ‘Mr. 3000’.
Mac has been ranked at 72 on the 100 greatest standups of all time, and has been nominated twice for Emmy awards and the Golden Globe awards respectively.
