Born in 1952, Denzel Hayes Washington was the son of two very active black parents. He was soon influenced by his mom to get into the show business, who was the owner of a Salon. After he completed his B.A. in Drama and journalism in university, he was awarded a scholarship in the American Conservatory Theatre (ACT), where he was for a year after which he made his debut in 1981 in the film ‘carbon copy’. His break through was starring in the popular television program ‘St. Elsewhere’, which brought out his name and got people talking about him and his character.
It was 1992 that Washington was recognized as a talented Hollywood actor after his academy award winning performance in the classic political film ‘Malcolm X’, where he stars as a Black political activist. His role earned him an Oscar nomination and a pat on the back by popular directors Roger Ebert and Martin Scorsese, who claim the movie to be one of the best in the 90s. Having turned down the role of Martin Luther King Jr, Washington went on to do his next commercially successful role in the movie ‘Philadelphia’ where he co stars with Tom Hanks. He plays the role of a homophobic lawyer, who defends a homosexual with AIDS, played by Hanks.
Through out the late 90s Washington stared in many movies that kept his name alive and agile in the showbiz industry. His next controversial role was in the movie ‘The Hurricane’, where he plays the role of real time boxer Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, who was sent to prison for 20 years for multiple murders that he didn’t commit. Though his performance didn’t earn him an Oscar, he was able to bag a golden globe award for his performance. In 2000, he starred in Disney’s ‘Remember the Titans’, where he plays the role of a black football coach who not only has to coach his team to play ball but also to learn to live among other races. A movie that has reached the hearts of thousands, and earned over $100 million.
Next came his award winning and flipside role in ‘Training day’, where he plays the role of a dirty cop. He stars with upcoming talent Ethane Hawk, and Eva Mendes. His performance went on to earn him the well awaited Oscar in his career. Most critics say that he was awarded the Oscar due to the board not recognizing his role in ‘The Hurricane’. His next successful role was in ‘John Q’, where he plays the role a father who turns into a criminal just to save the life of his kid.
To date Washington could be considered one the gems that Hollywood has, he has stunned the industry withmany roles in movies like ‘Out Of time’, ‘Man on fire’, ‘The Manchurian Candidate’ and many more.
