Hugo Wallace Weaver is a Nigerian-born English-Australian film and stage actor known for his roles as Agent Smith in ‘The Matrix’ and Elrond in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy of films, and also as the title character of ‘V for Vendetta’.
Weaving started his acting career in the Australian film ‘The Dirtwater Dynasty’ in 1988 and later starred opposite Nicole Kidman in the 1989 film ‘Bangkok Hilton’. In 1991 Weaving received the Australian Film Institute's award for "Best Actor" for his performance in the low-budget ‘Proof’. However, Weaving first received attention overseas with the international hit Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994. In 1998, Weaving received the award for "Best Actor" from the Montreal Film Festival for his performance in ‘The Interview’. His first major role was as Agent Smith in "The Matix" in 1999. In 2001 Mr. Weaving appeared as elf lord Elrond in the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring". He continued to act both these roles in the sequels that preceded.
His latest role was in ‘V for Vendetta’, where he stars along Natalie Portman to portray a comic book character. Weaving wears a Guy Forks mask right through out the movie and doesn’t reveal his real face at all. In real life, Hugo was diagnosed with Epilepsy when he was 13 years old, and is a strong Animal rights activist.
